He was growing up in Riverside during the tumultuous 60’s and had never seen a painting, let alone a working artist of any kind.
He was drawn to a paint store called Standard Brands and one day went in and bought some paint. He went back to his garage room and painted his first painting. The experience was an epiphany for Meyers- He realized it was his calling. He had been a troubled and self destructive teen to this point and painting became the emotional outlet and disciplined focus that gave meaning and substance to his life. His painting is all about humanity and human emotion.

Meyers feels that art is the clearest and most sophisticated way we have to communicate emotional honesty. While there is an overwhelming human need for this, his observation is that we have lost much of our humanity because contemporary society seems to be primarily dedicated to the pursuit of money and is based on consumption. The arts then become a commodity and the artist is marginalized and often used in the gallery system and art “industry.” Meyers also thinks that the quality of time we once had …the kind of time where kids could sit and listen to their grandparent’s stories, stories were passed on, linkages made…time now too is regimented. How does a child growing up today, where arts are often not even in the school curriculum, make sense of the world, emotion and perhaps non conformity and being different ? The dislocation of families is a huge problem and, worldwide, there are more refugees and victims of war torn environments than ever before. . Unesco, in the results of a global survey, identified rootlessness as the number one problem culturally in the world today.

Meyers will be showing “Wrecks, Rejects, and Failures “ paintings (and other works) at anodyne 2’s Pinyon Pines big studio building. It is unusual for a painter to expose publicly this aspect of the work, but these paintings are often even more beautiful, weathered as they are by the desert sun and the elements. They are directly illustrative of what a painter’s life is all about.
These will be sold with part of the proceeds going towards a plan for the studio building to become an unstructured creative mentoring environment with an emphasis on teens. It could be a multiuse arts facility including a recording studio and is part of Liz Gilbert/Anodyne 2 ‘s push to create a focal point in the desert for contemporary arts . Gilbert feels that part of the problem in the desert is that there’s no clearly visible arts community because there is , for example, no center incorporating studios and artist run spaces.
Meyers will be working with local teens to create an ambient space in the building and there will be a collaborative art project during the party. At Anodyne 2’s Desert Movers and Shakers Palm Desert event in March, Meyers set up a collaborative painting project on the subject of WAR that many visitors collectively painted. This will be on display as well.
